Custom nacelle cooling for onshore and offshore wind turbines
Wind Turbine Nacelle Heat Exchanger
Elevating global standards with exceptional, unmatched Dutch craftsmanship in advanced industrial heat exchange.

What is a Wind Turbine Nacelle Heat Exchanger?
A wind turbine nacelle heat exchanger removes the heat that builds up inside the nacelle, the housing on top of the tower that holds the generator, converter, gearbox, transformer and hydraulic system. Every one of these components loses part of its energy as heat, and solar load on the nacelle roof adds even more. If that heat stays inside, component temperatures rise, electronics derate and the turbine produces less power.
The nacelle heat exchanger transfers this heat to the outside air, either directly through an air-to-air heat exchanger or through a liquid-to-air coil connected to the turbine’s water-glycol circuit. Because the nacelle can stay closed, the internal air stays clean and dry, which is essential for offshore turbines exposed to salt mist and high humidity.

Engineered for Life Inside the Nacelle
Nacelle cooling is getting harder. Turbines keep growing in rated power, more of them run offshore or in hot climates, and the space inside the nacelle does not grow with them. A standard catalog cooler rarely fits that envelope. ICARUS designs and builds every nacelle heat exchanger around your turbine: your heat load, your air flows, your mounting points and your environment. Each unit is designed as part of the complete wind turbine cooling system, so it works with the pumps, fans and roof coolers already on board.
Air-to-Air Nacelle Heat Exchangers
An air-to-air nacelle heat exchanger keeps two air streams fully separated. Warm internal air from the nacelle passes through one side of the exchanger, cool ambient air passes through the other, and only heat crosses over. The nacelle stays sealed, so salt, dust and moisture never reach the generator or the power electronics. This makes air-to-air the preferred concept for offshore and coastal turbines, where an open ventilation system would pull corrosive air straight into the drivetrain. ICARUS builds these units with optimized fin geometry for a low pressure drop, so the internal and external fans use as little auxiliary power as possible.
Liquid-to-Air Coils for the Nacelle Air Loop
Many modern turbines already run a closed water-glycol circuit to cool the generator and converter. A liquid-to-air coil inside the nacelle uses that same circuit to cool the internal air, so the heat from component surfaces, cabinets and the transformer area is carried to the roof cooler instead of building up in the nacelle. ICARUS builds these coils as compact glycol heat exchangers with copper or stainless steel tubes, sized for your coolant flow, inlet temperature and allowable pressure drop. Combined with a duct and fan, the coil becomes a complete nacelle air cooler that fits between existing components.
Roof-Mounted Coolers and Cooler Tops
On top of the nacelle, the heat from the liquid circuits is released to the ambient air. These roof-mounted coolers work with fans or passively, using the wind flowing over the nacelle itself. ICARUS supplies the finned tube cores and complete cooler sections for these roof units, designed to handle the full turbine heat load at maximum ambient temperature without forcing the turbine to derate. Typical heat sources on this circuit are the generator, the converter and the gearbox lube oil cooler.
Materials and Corrosion Protection for Offshore Turbines
Offshore, a nacelle heat exchanger faces the same conditions as any offshore finned tube heat exchanger. It has to survive salt mist, condensation and temperature cycles for the full design life of the turbine, typically 20 to 25 years, with very limited access for service. Material choice decides whether that works. ICARUS builds nacelle heat exchangers in copper/copper, copper/aluminum, coated aluminum and fully stainless steel AISI 316 executions, matched to the corrosion class of the site. For the harshest locations we apply the same approach as our high corrosion environment heat exchangers: corrosion-resistant base materials, protective coatings and frames that avoid crevices where salt and water collect.
Built to Fit: Space, Weight and Retrofit
Every kilogram in the nacelle counts, and every unit has to pass through the service hatch and fit around existing components. ICARUS engineers the heat exchanger to your installation envelope, with custom dimensions, connection positions and mounting frames, and we split units into modules when that makes installation or replacement easier. This also makes ICARUS a strong partner for retrofit projects: when an existing nacelle cooler fails, corrodes or no longer delivers enough capacity, we can reverse engineer the unit and build a replacement that drops into the same position, often with better corrosion resistance than the original.

Transforming challenges into opportunities
A failing or undersized nacelle cooler means derated turbines, alarms and expensive crane or vessel mobilizations offshore. ICARUS turns that risk into a reliable cooling solution. Our engineers look at the full picture, from heat load and air flows to corrosion class and installation access, and design a nacelle heat exchanger that keeps your turbine producing at full power for its entire service life.

FAQ about Wind Turbine Nacelle Heat Exchangers
What does a nacelle heat exchanger do in a wind turbine?
A nacelle heat exchanger removes the heat produced by the generator, converter, gearbox, transformer and hydraulic system inside the nacelle and releases it to the outside air. This keeps component temperatures within their limits, prevents power derating on hot days and protects the electronics. Depending on the turbine design, the heat is transferred directly from air to air or through a liquid circuit and a liquid-to-air coil.
Should I choose an air-to-air or a liquid-to-air nacelle heat exchanger?
An air-to-air heat exchanger is the simplest way to keep the nacelle sealed while still using ambient air for cooling, which makes it a strong choice for offshore and coastal turbines. A liquid-to-air coil is the better fit when the turbine already has a water-glycol circuit for the generator and converter, or when the heat load is too high for the available air side surface. ICARUS can calculate both options for your heat load and installation space.
How do you protect a nacelle heat exchanger against offshore salt mist?
Protection starts with keeping salt out of the nacelle, which a closed air-to-air or liquid-to-air concept does. For the exchanger itself, ICARUS selects materials such as copper/copper, coated aluminum or stainless steel AISI 316, applies protective coatings where needed and designs frames without crevices where salt water can collect. The execution is matched to the corrosion class of the site and the design life of the turbine.
Can ICARUS build a replacement for an existing nacelle cooler?
Yes. For retrofit and service projects we can reverse engineer an existing unit from drawings, photos and measurements, and build a replacement that fits the same position and connections. Where the original unit failed because of corrosion or insufficient capacity, we can improve the materials or the thermal design at the same time. Both single units and fleet-wide replacement series are possible.
What information do you need to quote a nacelle heat exchanger?
The most important inputs are the heat load in kW, the air flows and temperatures on both sides or the coolant flow and temperatures, the maximum ambient temperature, the site type (onshore, coastal or offshore) and the available installation envelope. A drawing or photos of the current unit help a lot for retrofit projects. If some values are unknown, send what you have and our engineers will help you complete the specification.
